Where We Came From
The deeper we went into the 2009, the more disturbed and concerned I became about what was going on in Congress and DC. It seemed that Reid, Pelosi, and Obama were just gleeful that they could do whatever they wanted and no one could stop them. A trillion-dollar bailout here – a trillion-dollar bailout there – they were taking over car companies and banks and even insurance companies. I kept trying to make sense of it all but my mind couldn’t grasp the depths of what was happening. Or the depths of corruption in Washington.
Around this time, I joined Facebook and found many like-minded people concerned about the direction of our country. One of the problems I found was so many groups and so many web sites – there was no one site where every American could come together and say we’re taking back our country – one Congressional seat at the time.
I looked. Most groups were pretty static groups – you joined but then nothing. Or you joined and just plain forgot you joined. Or you joined because someone invited you to join. Pretty soon you’re a member of 200 groups or causes … does that make you more popular? Does that make you patriotic? Does that just make you feel good? You know, it didn’t make me feel good – or more patriotic. I was still concerned about what was going on in our country – bills were being passed through Congress without even being read – in the middle of the night!!
Something was rotten in DC!!! And the stench was starting to permeate the entire country.
When I looked back, it was easy to see how the media played such a huge part in what has happened to our country. Most people get their news after work while they’re in the kitchen fixing dinner with children wanting their share of attention, spouses wanting to eat, the dog is barking! The end result is that nobody knows what’s going on. How can they? And the main stream media – our supposedly trusted sources of news – were only giving one side. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I devoted hours every day finding out what was going on, not just a few minutes in the evening – and I had trouble wading through tons of information and misinformation to find out the truth. The truth is, folks – Washington doesn’t want you to know the truth. If you did, you’d be where I am … it’s time to get rid the career politicians. Yes, when they first go – they’re all glowy-eyed and passionate about representing you. But as time goes by, it becomes less about you and more about them. They enjoy the power, the lobbyists and special interests fawning over them. Human nature, I guess.
But they stopped representing you!
It’s very easy to start a group on Facebook – give it a name and that’s pretty much it. So I decided to start a group. But I needed a name – a name that said exactly what the group was about. Well, when you put it like that … the name was pretty much a given. CHANGE THE CONGRESS – but did I want to stop there? That was just too generic. I wanted to CHANGE THE CONGRESS IN 2010!!! By golly, there was my name!
CHANGE THE CONGRESS IN 2010 started with 1 member on July 21st, 2009 – I invited all of my Facebook friends to join. And that was how it all started.
I started saying I wanted 40 million Americans to stand up with me and say we’re taking back our country – one Congressional seat at the time. I believed the way to weaken the grip on the power in Washington was to dilute it – change the make-up of the members of Congress and we’ll change their attitude. I was personally appalled at the way the House blatantly ignored the wishes of the public on Cap-and-Trade. The public shut down the phone system – and some idiot Representative said that only meant they needed a new phone system!!!
Represent ME!!! Not yourself, not lobbyists, not special interests, not a political party! ME!
It all started with me … and you know what? I’m glad I did it. Because I believe those 40 million Americans will stand up together and say we’re taking back our country – one Congressional seat at the time!
